In the past we had presumed that the scars of acne, as with stretch marks on the body or burn scars, would be with us for life – that was before the appearance of  the domestic laser device, which proved otherwise.

Since just a few seconds are enough to develop an opinion about an individual, opinion clearly relies on outward appearance and body language; therefore, you must consider yourself as being the marketing tool that is most important and most available for you.

This is especially important when relating to a job interview, particularly in today’s complex employment conditions. Whether this refers to looking for a job after getting your degree, or during a mid-life career change – in a situation where dozens, if not hundreds, of people are competing for the same job – you need every possible advantage in order to get that very desirable job. The encouraging fact is that you can carefully plan the initial impression you will make, and which will bring you closer to your objective.

In this article I will tell you about ways of using make-up which will be most appropriate for a work interview.

The objective of make-up is to emphasize your natural beauty. Good make-up should emphasize the ‘good’ areas, while obscuring the areas of your face which are less attractive. The make-up needs to be solid and clean, so that it doesn’t attract unnecessary attention.

Remember, the most important rule to follow when making-up for a job interview is “leave well enough alone”. Exaggerated make-up and make-up which is overly colorful will “steal the show”, and the interviewer could possibly end up concentrating too much on your make-up, and not enough on you!

Make-up tones – in general, to create a solid look with make-up, earthy colors are the most appropriate: Browns, Olive, Beige and Cream. It is important to place emphasis on using a measured quantity of color and smudging the lines where the colors join, in order to reach a harmonious integration of the tones.

Here are a number of ideal color tones to project the various eye colors, according to the wheel of colors:

Brown eyes: Lilac, Brown, Beige or Cream.

Cover the area of the eyelid up to the crease using the Lilac shade. The area of the eyelid crease should be made-up with the Brown eye shadow; and to illuminate the eye, use the Beige or Cream on the brow bone.

Blue eyes: Brown, Peach, Cream.

The colors of eye-shadow that you choose will have an influence on the person looking at you, just like the scent of your perfume and, of course, how you have matched the style of your make-up and your clothing. Additionally, there are several don’t rules that it is important to avoid during the first date, because as the saying goes: “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression”.

The preparation for going on a first date is accompanied by a feeling of excitement about the date, and ‘butterflies’ in your stomach! What to wear? How to do your hair? How to make-up? These are just a few of the questions that go through your mind and, therefore, the first date is a one-time opportunity to make that first impression, and there’s no point complaining about superficiality, because this is really work. Your outward appearance is very significant in determining your initial impression; although, of course, we are not overlooking the importance of your character and your ability to participate in a meaningful dialogue. Your make-up for the first date needs to create an impression on your partner, and the first question you need to ask yourself is: what is the impression that you want to make on him?

Different kinds of make-up will leave different kinds of impression:

Natural make-up

Make-up need not necessarily be overly emphasized. The right make-up is something that can, on the one hand, conceal or repair what it is you wish to hide and, on the other hand, will bring out those areas that require only highlights and natural make-up; this will give your date an impression of who you are, since the make-up will subtly emphasize the contours of your face without creating an exaggerated impression. Select only neutral shades that flatter your natural tones; the color of your hair, the color of your skin and the color of your eyes are what should determine the correct shades that will simply provide a light “highlight” to your natural beauty, without taking control of it. It is, of course, important to match your make-up to the outfit that you have selected, and therefore you should choose a light dress in a shade that compliments you and is not too daring; or an elegant trouser matched with a buttoned-through blouse in a soft fabric.

Sexy make-up

If you want to create a more daring impression, you can invest in clothing and make-up that are intended to emphasize a sexy appearance. At the same time, even ‘sexy’ make-up can strike a balance and not emphasize the entire face too much. Try to choose the prettiest part of your face and emphasize that: if you’ve chosen your eyes, you can emphasize them using smoky make-up, and if you’ve chosen your lips, you can emphasize them in a strong shade of Red or deep Wine, according to the shade of your skin and your hair. To add an even greater touch of drama and mystery you can add false eyelashes. A black dress will complete the sexy look, and will add to the air of mystery. High-heeled shoes are the perfect complement to this type of make-up and clothing, conveying a sense of daring; they should therefore be added to complete the look.

Radiant Make-up

If you would like to leave a radiant impression, that is especially imposing and elegant, you can choose make-up that is glittering and radiant, to emphasize your face and to add an impressive and brilliant touch. You can do that by using dazzling shades of eye shadow for your eyes, bronzer for your skin, and add touches of glitter, or a combination of lipstick with glimmering lip gloss. Here too, it is very important not to exaggerate, in order not to create a look that is too ‘artificial’, but to choose one area and emphasize that slightly more than the other areas, by adding an element of radiance. According to your natural tones, choose shades that will bring out your look, and will not create too strong of a contrast – which could also create an impression that is too exaggerated. Complete the look with a sparkling outfit and, of course, shoes to match the look.

In addition to the make-up, your perfume will also leave an indelible impression . . . leaving a long trail of perfume is not recommended. Remember – many people are sensitive to smells. You want to use a perfumed preparation without any dominant scent and remember that – similar to the way scents affect mood and emotion – color also has a significant effect on the people who meet us. Also, applying nail polish in fashionable shades of green, light blue or yellow might indicate an unstable or extrovert personality, or even a superficial one. Clear nail polish is preferable by far.

Mineral Make-up is what it sounds like – make-up that is based on natural minerals which are used after they have been ground into various forms of fine powder. They do not contain any petroleum-based products, preservatives, artificial coloring, scent or alcohol.

The trend towards ‘mineral’ make-up is bringing in its wake a large following of disciples, since the word “mineral” is equated to these products possessing an aura of health and nature; but is everything called “mineral” really that? In fact, many products that are called ‘mineral’ contain just as many chemical and synthetic components as they do mineral ones, and for this reason they are almost identical in their ingredients as the ‘regular’ products.

In this article, you will learn the truth behind the mineral cosmetics industry. Facts that support mineral make-up products, as well as facts that reveal aspects that the cosmetics companies do not really wish you to know about. The objective of this article is to provide you with an objective point of view, as much as possible, so that you can judge for yourself and can reach your decisions regarding the use of these products based on factual information.

The main argument in support of mineral make-up products asserts that minerals, since they are natural and pure ingredients, do not harm the facial skin as chemical products do (bearing in mind that these chemicals often result in endangering the skin of the user).

An additional assertion is that mineral make-up contains natural sun screens, such as ‘titanium dioxide’ (which is used as a sun screen in quite a lot of other cosmetic products which are not referred to as “mineral”). These do not irritate the facial skin as many of the synthetic sun screens do. They do not clog the pores, do not aggravate the appearance of spots and pimples and, in certain instances, even contribute to the improved appearance of the facial skin.

Cosmetic products based on minerals, are established on the basic assertion that these are unique rare and natural products and, above all, are beneficial to the facial skin.

As we have said, these are the things that are claimed by the manufacturers of mineral cosmetics.

Apparently, all of this would be good and well if mineral cosmetics were composed only of minerals and did not also contain other ingredients. The problem is that many products that are called “mineral” are not absolutely mineral, and contain only a certain percentage of minerals together with chemical and synthetic materials, thus turning them into products that are almost identical in their composition as ‘ordinary’ products.

The companies which sell or manufacture make-up and minerals talk a lot about talc, which their products do not contain – and they often hint that in the ‘other’ products there is talc, which is asserted to have negative attributes, and are even carcinogenic.

These claims are incorrect and have never been supported by any research-based validation. In fact, talc is also a natural mineral and serves as one of the main components in millions of cosmetic products manufactured by a variety of cosmetic and beauty companies, starting with the inexpensive companies through to the most prestigious firms.

They also like to tell us that the ‘ordinary’ products contain perfume, coloring agents that are chemical based and other harmful things. All of the companies which produce mineral cosmetics want us to believe that their products are the best, the healthiest, the most medical, the most natural and the most organic.

However, the truth is somewhat different: these make-up products have hardly any distinctions from most ‘regular’ make-up, be it powder or liquid, and if we study the facts closely we will discover that there are very few realistic claims, and many more excessive assertions, misleading information and exaggerations.

In fact, anyone who has ever tried, once or many times, to apply eyeliner or mascara on herself knows the phenomenon of ‘missing the spot’. The stubborn line that veers up or down in exactly the wrong place and threatens to obliterate the entire task or, alternatively, the mascara that gets onto the eyelid or the area just under the eye. Even professional make-up artistes experience these problems when a line suddenly goes awry.

In the past, such ‘accidents’ meant removing all of the make-up and starting over again from the beginning. That takes time, nerves, and quite a lot of patience to repeat the entire process over again, hoping that the next time it will bring perfect results. The good news is that that epoch has passed: specific corrective products have brought with them a new era of precise work, and the ability of repairing specific spots, both for the professional make-up artiste and for the woman who wants to go out, but might need to repair her make-up during the day. There is no need to go around with wet-wipes in her bag, in the hope that she wont have to use them during the day to remove make-up. No need for the complication of awkwardly removing make-up (especially with eye make-up removal wipes), intended for small repair jobs when you have used make-up and then gone out for the evening. These products provide a quick, elegant, professional, friendly and very localized solution. Something went wrong with your make-up? A line has gone astray? Has an area streaked? No problem, a light touch with make-up corrective repairer, and you’re set to go.

 Hereunder two types of products for spot-on repair of make-up:

• Make-up correction pen:

This is a product which resembles a felt – tip pen with a sponge head which is dipped in eye make-up removal product. With just a touch on the skin, the make-up is erased on that spot only, and all you need to do it absorb the remainder of the removal product that has been left on the skin. Then you redo your make-up on that spot only. It is recommended to wipe the tip of the pen itself (where it came into contact with the skin) after each use. That will ensure that no remnants of make-up will remain on the pen tip, and ‘dirty’ the skin next time it comes in contact with the product.

• Disposable reparative sticks:

These are cotton sticks (similar to Q-tip) which are pre-dipped in a measured quantity of make-up remover and help to easily clean, repair and / or erase smeared make-up.
